Preface

The articles in this volume are based on lectures that were delivered during an international conference sponsored by the Department of Talmud at Bar Ilan University on May 22-23 , 2006 . The title of the conference was : “ Rabbinic Textuality , Transmission , and Redaction : The Historical and Literary Processes which Generated the Rabbinic Corpus" . The conference was organized by the chairman of the Talmud Department at the time , Professor Chaim Milikowsky . The present volume contains seven articles in Hebrew and four in English . Five of the articles in this collection concern Bavli and Yerushalmi . The articles by Shamma Friedman and Robert Brody represent important contributions to the question of the chronology , nature and authority of what is known in scholarship as the Stam ha’Talmud – the redactional layer of the Talmud .
