עמוד:*86
86 * - the spiritual interconnectedness and essential oneness of all phenomena, both living and non living, and a belief that happiness depends on living in accord with this understanding" ( p . 357 ) . The notion that the self is interrelated to the universe or to a divine principle can be found in many of the world’s religious, spiritual, and philosophical traditions and might even be considered as the core principle of all spiritual beliefs ( Garfield et al . 2014 ) . Holding oneness beliefs is correlated with the endorsement of values focused on others' welfare and are associated with an expansion of the self, so that it includes a sense of connectedness with humanity and nature . There is evidence that oneness beliefs are substantially beneficial for one's mental health ( Edinger - Schons, 2020 ) . But to our knowledge, no research has attempted to examine whether oneness experiences and the resulting sense of oneness can compensate for attachment - related injuries and heighten the sense of attachment security among attachment - insecure people . Spiritual Oneness as a Source of Attachment Security Can spiritual oneness experiences increase the sense of attachment security among people with insecure attachment orientations ? Because attachment - avoidant individuals typically try to maintain distance and independence from their attachment figures and project their negative working models onto new relationships and spiritual experiences, it is possible that they would not benefit from oneness experiences . In contrast, for attachment - anxious individuals, who typically search for a sense of connectedness and have an urgent need to merge with others Mikulincer & Shaver, 2016 ) , oneness experiences can fulfill these unmet needs and might instill ( a precarious and temporary sense of attachment security, immediately after feeling united with the universe . This increased sense of attachment security might then be manifested in a sense of comfort, calmness, heightened exploration and openness, all derived from the confidence that support will be available when needed . Following these ideas, Berger ( 2022 ) hypothesized that making contextually salience the experience of oneness with the universe would increase state - like feelings of attachment security and engagement in exploration of new experiences, mainly among anxiously - attached individuals . In examining this hypothesis, Berger conducted four studies . In each of these studies, Berger ( 2022 ) assessed participants’ attachment orientations in close relationships
