Editorial A Gaze at the Orient

The 2004 AICA ( Association of International Art Critics ) World Congress was held in Taipei and Kaohsiung in early December . Soon thereafter the Indian Ocean overflowed . The shock of the Orient began in Bangkok and ended in Hong Kong , with Taiwan in the middle . It takes time before you raise your gaze toward the vertically written , colorful street signs , mostly in shades yellow-orange and shiny red . It takes time before you direct a gaze at the skyscrapers of the most prominent architects of the 21 st century , and all of a sudden discover temples at eye level ; before you can contain the mass of gold , the colors of ( literally ) burning fire . It takes time before you can stop for a moment , breathe in the rising scents of incense and be swept in with the crowd of believers in Buddha , Confucius , Tao , the earth god and the gods of water ; unintentionally start walking along with them , become a part of the flux of people streaming toward the riverbank , to send an offering ...  אל הספר
