Buddha's Head Full of Telephone Books

Rivka Rass A gigantic Buddha ' s head with four faces fills an entire room in the gallery . Each face looks in a different direction . The Buddha ' s eyes are closed as if dreaming , and his four faces seem to be in deep meditation . The grayish faces are expertly carved , and made , it seems at first glance , of wood or marble . But when you let an inquisitive finger slide on the smooth cheek , you are surprised to discover that you touch paper , in fact the edge of book pages . You can riffle the Buddha as you do book pages and have words , names numbers peep back at you . The experience prompts you to look at the Buddha ' s head and its four faces differently . Made of telephone books , they seem now more fragile , even softer , more elegant and definitely more spiritual . Amazingly , all the telephone books that go into the sculpture make one smooth surface . They fit together neatly and seamlessly .
