A New English Schurer The publication of a revised edition of the first volume of Schurer ' s masterpiece by two Oxford scholars , G . Vermes , known for his important contributions to the study of ancient Jewish literature and history , and F . G . B . Millar , one of the most distinguished contemporary Roman historians , recalls to mind that Oxford was once the main centre in Europe of the study of Jewish culture and history in the intertestamental era , and that many pioneers in various fields of learning relating to this period were connected with Oxford . Chief among them was the learned J . Rainolds ( 1549-1607 ) , President of Corpus Christi College , who in his Censura Librorum Apocryphorum Veteris Testamenti , published in 1611 , laid the foundations of the critical treatment of the Apocrypha .
