4.8.3. The Debate about the Time of Composition of Nathan’s Oracle

323 David Becomes King later periods that were suggested by some scholars as the time of the Oracle’s creation, such as Josiah’s reign or the period of Zerubbabel’s leadership, when there were no exceptional Israelite military victories, do not fit the exposition description ( v . 1 ) or the promise within the Oracle about more important and impressive victories in the future vs . 9 – 11 ) . Moreover, it does not fit a promise that the people of Israel ( would not suffer from their enemies any longer as had happened in the past ( v . 10 ) , while they suffered so many defeats and disasters after the death of Solomon . In my view, it is more plausible to suppose that initially Nathan’s Oracle was borrowed from a contemporary royal archive or a well - known oral testimony or fresh tradition, then adapted and incorporated in the early book on David’s personal history that was written by one of Nathan’s admirers several years after David’s death and Solomon’s succession .
