I adopted this method in one of my earlier works ( Garsiel 1985 a ) . Yet in many instances in the book under dis - cussion, a multi - disciplinary approach serves the scholar better . Whilst adopting many observations of the “Close Reading” method, I cannot ignore the fact that the struggle between Saul and David reflects also the subtle debate between the earlier pro - monarchic author of the book and the later anti - monarchic one . This subtle debate enriches many insights throughout the book . Furthermore, there are other considerations that cannot be ignored, such as history, geography, archeology, etc, that contribute to our understanding of the Biblical text .
