89 How David Kills Goliath that refers to an earlier event ( vs . 56 – 58 ; cf . Bodner 2008 : 189 ) . In the king and the chiefthis earlier scene, which is missing in LXXb , commander of his army are inspecting the battlefield and the troops . Both were probably sitting on the southern gate of the fortress of Sha ʿ arayim, i . e, Khirbet Qeiyafa, on the northern range that overlooks the ravine as well as the slopes of the Sochoh range to the south where the Philistines are deploying . The king then observes an unknown young boy going out of the ranks of the Israelite army towards the Philistine giant in the ravine below that separates both armies . Saul becomes curious and asks Abner for the young boy’s identity . The question raised by many commentators is : why neither the king nor Abner know the youngster’s identity when he served as the king’s arms bearer and Saul interviewed him as a candidate for the one - on - one combat .
