NEW CARTOGRAPHICAL EVIDENCE ONTHE EFFORTSTO SURVEY SULTAN ABDÜLHAMID’S LANDS IN NORTHERN PALESTINE AND SOUTHERN SYRIA ATTHE END OFTHE19 TH CENTURY Yuval Ben - Bassat and Yossi Ben - Artzi Three maps dealing with surveys of lands personally bought by Sultan Abdülhamid II in Northern Palestine and the Houran ) çiftlik lands ( were recently located at the Ottoman archive in Istanbul . These surveys were conducted by military experts between the late 1880 s and mid - 1890 s . The maps are rare ; to the best of our knowledge no similar original maps have previously been studied . The aim of this article is to present these maps to researchers interested in the region and period, analyze them and demonstrate their meaning and importance in the wider context of land purchases by Sultan Abdülhamid II in the Empire in general and Palestine in particular .
