ABSTRACT

The Ultra - Orthodox educational system sancti fi es Torah study in its boys ’ schools but encourages girls to combine religious studies with secular subjects so that they will be prepared for the burden of supporting their families , while their husbands study Torah without having gainful employment . In 2013 / 14 , the Education Ministry began implementing a reform that enabled Ultra - Orthodox schools to change their status from “ Recognized and Uno ffi cial " to “ O ffi cial " by joining a new State Ultra - Orthodox educational stream , which is not anchored in any legislation . Students in these schools are supposed to study a full core curriculum adapted for the -Ultra Orthodox sector and supervised by the Education Ministry . In the years 2013 to 2017 , 37 Ultra - Orthodox schools chose to join this reform , comply with its requirements , and change their status to “ State Ultra - Orthodox .
