Abstract

Multilingual , multicultural , immigration - absorbing Israeli society is confronted with complex linguistic issues that manifest themselves , in the local education system . Hebrew , the dominant language underwent an impressive revival process over a century ago , and its attainment by speakers of other languages is accompanied by dilemmas concerning acquisition modes as well as the maintenance of the immigrants ' home languages and cultures . The status of the two official languages , Hebrew and Arabic , affords an opportunity for a political and historical debate on the social nature and role of languages and cultures . In addition , the aspiration to prepare learners for a global English - speaking yet multilingual world poses a highly complicated challenge . The aim of this book is to present research studies that focus on the complexity of language teaching in Israel so as to increase awareness of the issues and draw attention to the interaction amongst them .
