The New Whitney Museum

Rivka Rass Isn’t it time there was a museum wholly dedicated to the spirit of Israeli art in Israel ? This question haunted me while visiting the Whitney Museum of American Art in its new , elegant building in the old Meatpacking District downtown , on the bank of the Hudson River . The newly relocated Whitney overlooks the Hudson on one side , and the High Line on the other . It is exhilarating to be in a country that celebrates its art and artists . The architect chosen to design the new building is Italian superstar , Renzo Piano , who made his name , along with British architect Richard Rogers , designing Centre Pompidou in Paris , which turned the world of architecture upside down . In 1998 , Piano won the prestigious Pritzker Prize , considered the Nobel Prize of architecture . While the new eight-story Whitney building is not all that striking and is not likely to turn the world of architecture upside down , it may well in ֳ uence the attitude toward building art museums .
