Historical geography of the Mughar battlefield during World War I Dr Avi Sasson The region lies in the southern coastal plain , in the geographical area referred to by academics as the 'Judean Coastal Plain' or the 'Pleshet Coastal Plain ' , which stretches between Nahal Shikma ( Wadi Hessi ) in the south and Nahal Yarkon ( Nahr el Auja ) in the north . At its widest part , the southern coastal plain measures some 27 km ( 17 miles ) in the south , while in the north it is only 15 km ( 9 miles ) wide . The region is characterised by stretches of sand along the coast , some 7 km across ( nearly 5 miles ) at their widest point near Rishon LeZion . Also characteristic of this region are Kurkar ( calcareous sandstone ) ridges . The further north one goes , the more unbroken these ridges are , as the result of a variety of geomorphologic processes .
