Abstract

Israeli culture is an eclectic product composed of various elements and with multiple sources of inspiration , including the Hebrew Sabra culture , the diverse religious traditions of the several Jewish ethnic groups , the Western consumer and entertainment culture , with its capitalist orientation , New Age spirituality , and Arab-Muslim culture . What makes Israeli culture unique is its Jewishness . Yet despite the increasing scholarly and public recognition that Israeli culture is replete with symbols , beliefs , and cultural practices with a “ Jewish" character , there is a woeful lack of analytical discussion about the meaning of the vague entity known as “ Israeli culture , " whose definition is a matter of public debate . This book proposes an analytical approach to the Jewishness of Israeli culture and examines the issue by studying the cultural history of the Jewish holidays and their significance for contemporary Israeli Jews .
