Life is Beautiful… Sometimes: Italian Jews Coming to America, a Case Study of Thriving from Trauma - Gabriel Cavaglion

עמוד:*37

* 37 Other scholars have found that years of education, IQ and a good cognitive ability can serve as protection against risk factors of post - traumatic stress disorder ( Brewing et al . , 2000 ) . Individuals with more intellectual resources might be better able to create some new meaning from their traumatic experience and translate it into a personal positive narrative and new forms of altruism ( Butcher et al . 2013 ) . However, a strong link – positive correlation – between lower class, minority groups, poverty and risk to trauma is well documented ( Idem ) . Therefore, new tools, based on growth following adversity, propose new kinds of psychological assessment questionnaires and scales ( Joseph and Linley, 2008 ) . Given the findings in the literature, the question is : what are the common denominators of our population, and the explanation to a lack of any reported cases of mental pathology, despite many traumatic events ? It is difficult to present results using a quantitative methodology, since Pontecorboli edited her book by chapters and passages that fit her style of writing . We can only identify the most significant narratives or events that will fit our qualitative categorization . x First, the book mostly deals with wealthy people, who had the financial resources – as well the social contacts and resources – necessary to pull strings in order to obtain recommendations and affidavits to immigrate to the U . S . 5 ( Pontecorboli, 2014, p . 25 - 27 ) . Many fled to the U . S . on first class ship departments, others had superior accounts in American Banks ( Idem, p . 126 ) . Therefore, we can suggest that some range of controllability still existed . But as we see in the last chapter, money or gold can't always help . x Most of the protagonists have a literate and academic background, their intelligence and cognitive tools were useful in reframing their experiences and in creating new meanings . These qualities were also an advantage for the acquisition of a new language ( Idem, p . Due to their personal resources, they weren't passive, but rather kept on moving, . ) 38 trying time and again to find a solution as soon as possible ( Idem, p . 20 ) . x We are dealing with people who, due to their professions, were more exposed to other sources of information – even inside the Fascist regime ( Idem, p . 24 ) . Many of them had some contact with other countries and saw the events beyond the Fascist iron curtain . To some extent, they saw the writing on the wall even before the racial laws were enacted . Therefore, some level of predictability can be found . For example, Gigliola Colombo was well informed by her Jewish German nanny : “Here we are : it is going to start here as well” ( Idem, p . 19 ) . The wealth also used for bribe and easy transportation . 5
