After the liberation of Italy in 1945, various authors and their biographical and fictional works became very popular amongst Italian readership, but they were never brought to our attention in our formal curriculum . My personal reading added further pieces to my confused puzzle, but again I couldn’t find any common denominator amongst the survivors ; to name a few : Primo Levi, Carlo Levi, Natalia Ginzburg and Giorgio Bassani . For me, all these stories were akin to “braille letters - the holes create the real content” ( Guttfreund, 2000, p . 61 ) . Less was said about those who left the country and had to struggle with various ordeals . France ( before 1940 ) , Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, UK, Morocco, Cuba, Palestine – and even Turkey, Australia and South America – were safe harbours for these fugitives . Their stories have started to emerge over the last three decades, such as Broggini ( 1998 ) and Toscano Even less was known about migrants to the U . S . ( Fermi, 1968 ) . For example, in De . ) 2003 ( Felice’s ( 1972 ) seminal work no reference to this population were found . Pontecorboli's Perspective In 2014, an Italian journalist and reporter, Gianna Pontecorboli, published the book America Nuova Terra Promessa ( Pontecorboli, 2014 ) . She collected information about Jewish escape to the U . S . , mostly after the introduction of Benito Mussolini’s race laws in the summer of 1938 . In her book, that included interviews, she reviewed retrospective personal stories, journals and memoirs of almost 100 people and their relatives who underwent these dramatic events . This book can be seen as form of oral history, a rich resource for further inductive “meta - analysis” by scholars from various disciplines . From this material, important moments of the Italian Jewish escape to the US began to emerge as a story of bereavement, recovery and growth - a facet less known by the public and by scholars . Aim and Method Pontecorboli’s book studied almost one fifth of a population of ca . 2000 immigrants . Based on textual analysis of the journalist book, this paper will review personal stories and will identify several common denominators amongst a sample from the stories in her book . The aim of the paper is to suggest insights, in hindsight, through the lens of a researcher in social work and psychopathology . Pontecorboli’s book can be seen as a secondary source for qualitative analysis . My paper is inductive and grounded on these second - hand accounts ( Charmaz, 2006 ) . To use a
