The Rose, the White Rose, and Jay DeFeo's Death Rose

Rivka Rass . New York One day in 1 958 , a young painter took a large canvas , scratched the remnants of two paintings , of a mountain and of Jacob wrestling with the Angel , and started a new painting . Her name was Jay DeFeo . She was 29 years old , gifted , attractive , intelligent and popular . She began by loading layers of white and gray paint onto the canvas , creating long grooves radiating from the center . Unsatisfied , she scratched away the paint and reloaded the painting with new paint , scratching away and loading , day in , day out . For eight years she did almost nothing but work on this one painting , closing herself in her studio , subsisting on brandy and cigarettes . She named the painting The Rose , although it did not resemble one .
