527 | Overturning Beds on the Part of the Mourner r . Yonah and r . Yosi both ] reported [ in the name of r . Shimon ben Lakish : Why does ( the mourner ) sleep in an overturned bed ? So that he should awaken up in the night and remember he is in mourning . and another ] authority [ said : Since he is sleeping on an upturned bed, when he wakes up in the night he should remember he is in mourning . the difference between the latter two traditions is as follows : according to the first, a mourner should not fall into deep sleep, so that he should not be totally unaware of his state of mourning ; according to the second, he sleeps on an upturned bed so that if he wakes up during the night he should be aware of his state of mourning .
