16. The Huppah and Mock Nuptials

Part One – Life | 190 ceremony within the framework of the funeral rites . thus in some places certain mourners assume the roles of members of a wedding party . When a young man is being buried, a young woman dresses as a bride ; and when a young woman is being buried, a young man is attired as a groom . Even more common is the practice of having bridesmaids and groomsmen march in the funeral procession . In all such cases the deceased and all others who carry out mock - wedding roles are dressed for the parts they are supposed to play . Bride and bridegroom wear proper, traditional wedding garb with nuptial cockades, and bear wreaths . these may be specially purchased in town, or the metal crowns used in the wedding service may be borrowed from the church . the custom of mock nuptials is not widely observed today, the practice in most cases being reduced to dressing a dead maiden in bride’s clothes .
