Abstract The kibbutz is a society with a voluntary political system . As such it has no compulsory means to implement its binding decision making . The political system of the kibbutz evolved as a post­anarchic direct democracy . Its effectiveness was very strongly related to the regular participation of the many in the authoritative and binding decision making process, especially by participation in the general assembly ( asefa / siha ) . In the past the wide participation in the decision making process usually created a supportive public opinion for the leadership of the kibbutz . The founders were very charismatic leaders who exercized an immense influence on their followers and on public opinion . Afew were outstanding personalities who wielded great spiritual and intelectual influence .
