A God who hides His face, who is, as it were, on vacation when He is most needed, is not better than one who decrees that evil should befall the world . From the Biblical point of view, divine hester panim is part of the punishment for Israel’s sins, not simply a form of divine indifference . If, however, hester panim is not an adequate explanation for the existence of evil, does an adequate explanation exist ? No one has yet been able to provide one .
