iv OLD ROOTS IN NEW SOIL Mo s h e Si c r o n The demographic characteristics and patterns of FSU immigrants in Israel : a demographic - statistical overview Close to one million immigrants migrated to Israel in the period 1989 to 2009 from the republics of the Former Soviet Union . From this mass immigration 9 - 10 % emigrated in this period ` some died . 180,000 babies were born in Israel to mothers of this group . By the end of 2009 this % 10 community numbered 950 thousand persons ( 17 % of the Jewish population in Israel ) and is the largest of the various communities . In the same period migration of Russian Jews was also directed to the USA Germany and other countries . In this paper a short description of the demographic composition of this wave on arrival to Israel .
