xvii Abstracts tourists . Drawing on extensive primary materials – letters, travel logs, KGB surveillance materials – it examines the direct encounters between Israelis and Soviet Jews . The analysis of these informal interactions makes it possible to contextualize, examine and question some of the accepted meta - narratives . Furthermore, it sheds light on the diversity of notions of Jewishness among contemporary Soviet Jews . During this period, many of them showed genuine interest in the State of Israel without regarding themselves as Zionists or engaging in any kind of informal activism . They were neither Zionists nor anti - Zionists ; neither passive Soviet subjects nor devoted political activists .
