Abstract

In ultra - Orthodox society , academic education has yet to win widespread public approval as a matter of principle and faces grave difficulties from the practical perspective . One of the main topics debated by ultra - Orthodox society in this context is how to view the pursuit of a general academic education . This is because academic education – a hallmark of the “ outside " world – fosters and disseminates the values of modernity and is at odds with ultra - Orthodox society ’ s principle of self - preservation . While the acquisition of higher education by the ultra - Orthodox , and primarily ultra - Orthodox women , enjoys some legitimacy in the community , many rabbis and a large segment of the community still shun it . For the state and its authorities , ultra - Orthodox society ’ s participation in the Israeli economy is a crucial element of long - term policy and planning .
