Aron Einat Everyday Life in the Vilna Ghetto SUMMARY Course of Events : Vilna was highly regarded in the Jewish world , and was known by the unique name – “ The Jerusalem of Lithuania" . The city boasted a well–developed spiritual life , and included a wide range of institutions for education and study , research centers , several newspapers , a theater , an orchestra and a choir , famous authors , and so on . Apart from all these , the city was a comprehensive center for Torah study , especially for the “ Mitnagdim" – “ opponents" – the followers of the Vilna Ga'on ( Rabbi Eliyahu ben Shlomo Zalman , 1720-1797 ) .
