Sergio Edelsztein in Conversation with Marina Abramovic Technology with Chinese soldiers , with local people , whereas here I will be in solitude for 600 hours , and in general , in a kind of military situation , where you wake up in the morning , go to M 0 MA perform , go home ; you don't connect with anybody , you don't make phone calls , you don't look at your emails , as if you were in a monastery . To me it is an important period during which literally , life becomes a performance and performance becomes life . The twelve days without food and talking , as in The House with the Ocean View , seem like a short period compared with the three months of this forthcoming task right now . [ ... ] S . E .: So what is going to happen after that ? You told me that you were planning a new version of The Biography with Bob Wilson for 2011 ? M . A .: Right now I need my body and my mind to be ready for this task . After that , there will be a new period , so after finishing the performance and taking some time to rest , I will go on to the next adventure , to re-enact my life , and once again — stage the things that happened to me recently , during the past six or seven years since the last Biography was made with Michel Laub . The new Biography , with Bob Wilson , will be very interesting . The idea is that I give the directors all the elements , and they can they . ' s comp y up without being bound by chronology or historical facts . Laub for instance , left out everything Slavic . So that every time I play The Biography , my life looks completely new to me because it' a new version of my life . Wilson ' s remix will be called Life and Death of Marina Abramovic , and will include two funerals . will begin with a funeral which is symbolical of the funeral of p , 1 sl life . [ ... ] S . E .: Tell me about the trip to Laos , where you shot 8 Lessons on Emptiness with a Happy End . M . A .: I went there three times . I was invited by curator France Morin . The first trip was just to figure out what I could do there I was invited to see the place . She asked me in advance what was interested in seeing in Laos , so I sent her an email saying , " Sergio Edelsztein : For a long time now you have been very direct , very elaborate and programmatic in making your life a part of your art . Most artists are ambivalent about letting their private life and childhood slip out and be available in the interpretation of their work . You opened your childhood , and through it , in fact , quite often you have been psychoanalyzed by art critics . It seems to me it all started from your life with Ulay that was a constant work of art , but then also when you split up with Ulay , the split became a work too . Marina Abramovic : I create my work from everything that happens in my life . S . E .: So my idea for this interview is to take things a few steps further . Let's not talk about art , let's talk about life . Then our readers will be able to extrapolate , from your daily life , how you integrate the things that interest you in your work , the energetic interest , the Buddhist teachings , food , the daily routine . Also your teaching — which coordinates life and artistic practice as well ... M . A .: Not many artists explore the contradictions between art and life . There are so many things that I want in my art , but in my private life I cannot achieve . For instance , I know chocolate is bad , but I eat it constantly , things like that . S . E .: Do you feel that the 600-hour long performance scheduled for next spring as part of your show at the Museum of Modern Art ( M 0 MA ) , New York , is comparable to the suffering , the cleaning , the cleansing ... Is it analogous to The Great Wall Walk inasmuch as they both relate to the two most painful separations in your life ? M . A .: Yes , I really look forward to taking this perspective and doing this work , this task of a 600-hour performance . The show will be entitled "The Artist is Present" — present in the most direct and literal sense : being there and being available to everyone . The work will introduce a new concept , different from anything I have ever done before . The Great Wall Walk was also three months long . It was a bit different because was walking and also interacting with the Chinese government
